After receiving several contractor quotes over $50k for a basement remodel, homeowner empowers himself to tackle his first DIY for $8k: 'I've gained a ton of respect for myself'

DIY endeavors are not for the weak-hearted. Often costing more than paying a professional, after buying all of the tools, DIY guidebooks, and specialty single-use materials, homemade projects are daunting. Not only that, but these types of home projects can start off with the best of intentions, then crumble into chaos when you've run out of time, energy, or the will to continue onward. How much do you really want that built-in jacuzzi, that tree house, or a converted garage? 

However, a soon-to-be DIY homeowner realized the potential payoff of doing his own hard labor, and after receiving quotes for a $50k basement remodel, he took matters into his own hands. Almost purely out of spite, he started crunching numbers on the costs, scouring the Internet for tips, and hyping himself up for his first DIY project. And after 4 months of hard work, late nights after his shift, and new calluses forming on his hands, this homeowner realized exactly how rewarding his hard work could be.

After one perfect movie night in his new entertainment center, I bet this man was already thinking about his next home improvement project…

  • The original plan seemed pretty simple/straight forward. Call a handful of local companies in the area, have them quote us on fishing a 24'x12' rectangle of the basement, review the quotes...and pick one that seemed reasonable.
